Serves as the legal point of contact for advice and support on all legal issues related to labor and employment in the Company. Provides legal counsel on labor and employment related matters, which may include, but not limited to, human resources issues, wage and hour law, workers’ compensation, wrongful termination, discrimination, unemployment and other state agency claims, labor relations, employee benefits, employment agreements and policy related issues, FMLA matters, employment related litigation, grievances and arbitration and generally assists the KONE Law Department, Human Resources, and other functional areas in the Company. Significant contribution to KONE’s bottom line by protecting monetary interests; managing risk; and implementing corporate compliance programs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES

  • Provide advice and counsel on employment law issues including hiring, discipline, terminations, pay and benefits. Counsels HR, local management and supervisors on handling employee relations matters, including employee counseling, discipline and benefits issues.

  • Manage and support outside counsel in the prosecution or defense of employment related claims and litigation.Serve as legal liaison with KONE’s EPL carrier, including communicating regarding the status of claims and litigation and supporting KONE’s annual renewal EPL insurance renewal.

  • Provide legal support to Human Resources in the investigation and preparation of responses to administrative claims.Represent the company in administrative proceedings with the EEOC or applicable state agencies, including the negotiation of resolution of claims.

  • Review and provides input on policies, procedures and specific cases which are impacted by legislation such as FMLA, ADA, FLSA, OSHA, ERISA, state Worker’s Compensation and Employment discrimination laws.

  • Assist employment law team in developing, implementing, improving and reviewing legal training.

  • Lead culture change in context of responsibilities

  • Serve as trusted advisor to business

  • Utilize Total Quality Management principles and participate on Total Quality Teams; utilize Six Sigma Greenbelt

  • Other miscellaneous matters as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university and J.D. from accredited law school.

  • At least seven years experience working with complex, high exposure labor and employment issues in a corporate or law firm setting with problem solving, negotiation, and dispute resolution experience.

  • Familiarity with construction industry, sales organizations, and manufacturing.

  • In house experience strongly preferred

  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
